Travis Picking, named after Merle Travis involves playing a steady bass pattern with the thumb and filling out some syncopated rhythms with the fingers of the right hand (assuming a right handed guitarist). It is a great accompaniment style for folk and ragtime music amongst other styles.
In the first example, the thumb plays a steady root/fifth pattern. This is the fundamental feature of Travis picking and should be constant throughout.
On Stave 2, we add a "pinched" high G, using the thumb and ring finger together.
Staves 3 and 4 - we now start adding offbeat open string notes in between the steady bass pattern played by the thumb
Stave 5 - combine the offbeat open string notes with the pinched high G note from stave 2.
