Guitar tablature (tabs) is a visual representation of notes on the guitar neck. At the far left of each line of tablature, you will see the names of each string. The string at the bottom of each line is the low E string, i.e., the thickest string on the guitar (string 6). Consequently, the string at the top of each line is the high E string, i.e., the thinnest string on the guitar (string 1).
The tabs in this file demonstrate how to play Patterns 1 and 2 from our first lesson. When you see '0' on one of the lines, it indicates that you must play the corresponding string 'open', or without fretting a note. When you see, for example, '2' on the high E string, it indicates that you must use one of the fingers on your left hand to 'fret' the corresponding string at the corresponding fret.
You will notice that the melody in Patterns 1 and 2 moves from high E string to the low E string. This is done to practice proper fretting technique through placement of the left arm, thumb, and elbow. Finally, remember the following things during your practice:
1) Before attempting these exercises, make sure the guitar is balanced using the four contact points discussed in our first lesson: the inside of both thighs (roughly halfway to the knee), a few inches below the right elbow (towards the wrist), and on or just above the sternum at the center of your chest.
2) When fretting a note on the guitar, the left hand thumb should remain close to the halfway point on the back of the guitar neck. Sometimes the thumb can slide closer to the bottom of the back of the guitar neck to create more space and flexibility for the left hand. However, do not allow the left hand thumb to slide towards the top of the back of the guitar neck (towards the ceiling). This decreases flexibility and can ultimately result in injury to the tendons and ligaments of the left hand.
3) Keep in mind that Patterns 1 and 2 are done out of 'Home Position' for the right hand: Thumb plays string 6 (E), index plays string 3 (G), middle plays string 2 (B), and ring plays string 1 (E).
4) In classical pedagogy, the names of the right hand fingers are referred to as follows: P = Thumb, I = Index, M = Middle, A = Ring. Therefore, we will refer to Patterns 1 and 2 as P, I, M, A and P, A, M, I, respectively.
5) Finally, remember to utilise good posture while playing, as this will reduce stress on your body and allow you to remain relaxed, which will greatly benefit the quality of your playing as well as your attention span. Make sure that your back is straight, and that your left foot is elevated with a footstool, guitar case, etc. to gently raise the angle of the guitar neck towards the ceiling. Your neck and shoulders should remain relaxed and both the left and right hand wrists and forearms should feel as supple as when they are hanging at your sides.
